A Three-Peat For The Women's Rowing Team and Kris Sanford

WORCESTER, MA - The Syracuse University women’s rowing team won the overall title at the BIG EAST Rowing Challenge for the third straight year on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, MA on Sunday, April 27.
Syracuse head rowing coach Kris Sanford was named the BIG EAST Coach of the Year for the third consecutive year. The Orange boats turned in three first-place finishes.
The Orangewomen’s varsity eight won its third conference championship, while the novice eight and novice four captured conference titles for the second straight year in those races. Syracuse placed second in the junior varsity eight race, and finished third in the varsity four A and B races. Overall, Syracuse collected 112 points, edging Notre Dame, which had 110 points.
“I think it was a strong showing for us,” said Sanford. “Everyone rowed well. It’s a good confidence-builder for us as we start our training for Eastern Sprints.”
The rowing challenge title came down to the varsity eight race again. The 16th-ranked Orangewomen crossed the finish line in 6:26.4, six seconds ahead of Notre Dame’s varsity eight. Rutgers placed third in 6:34.9. Junior tri-captain Marisa Begley coxed the varsity eight, while senior Nicole Garofalo served as the stroke. Senior Bonnie Chapman was in the bow seat. Lesley Wolf, Lindsey Heumann, Shawna O’Brien,Anna Goodale, Seana Miller and Kelly McGrorey rowed in seats two through seven, respectively.
The Orangewomen’s next race is for the Orange Plus Cup. SU races Massachusetts and Villanova at home, on Onondaga Lake, on Saturday, May 3.
