The rowing team's annual race against Boston University on Saturday, March 29 was a little more special this year. The winner of the 2003 race won the Kittell Cup, donated by a former SU rower, and named after Syracuse’s associate athletic director Janet Kittell.
The SU varsity eight not only took home the inaugural Kittell Cup on Saturday, but the team swept all four races on Saturday against Boston University and Massachusetts.
“It was a great day because we swept all the races,” said head coach Kris Sanford after the races. “We were able to take home the Kittell Cup for the first time and that was nice. There were some good close races.”
Former Syracuse rower Kristin Bidwell ‘90 donated the cup as a way to give back to the university.
“I have always vowed to give back to the University so as to provide others with the same benefits I had,” said Bidwell in the March issue of SU’s women’s rowing alumni newsletter. “I was a scholarship athlete and would like to eventually repay my scholarship. I think that’s the best thanks I can give.”
Bidwell funded the trophy with the condition that it be named for someone who has provided outstanding support for the women’s rowing team. The team voted on several candidates, and Janet Kittell was chosen as the cup’s namesake.
“I think it’s great,” said Sanford in the March issue of SU’s women’s rowing alumni newsletter. “I’m not surprised the team made this great choice. Janet has always been an advocate for us, and she really takes the time to learn a lot about the sport. She knows the kids and they know her.”
“This is such an incredible honor considering others who have trophies named for them,” said Kittell in the March issue of SU’s women’s rowing alumni newsletter.
