No. 19 Syracuse Crew To Race No. 4 Dartmouth For Packard Trophy
5/16/2003 11:58:40 AM | Men's Rowing
Syracuse and Dartmouth have competed for the Packard Trophy annually since 1960. MIT also raced for the prize until the late ‘70s. The Orangemen won eight of the first nine races in the ‘60s, and have taken the trophy 21 times in 42 starts. The Big Green have won the cup 16 times and have held it since 1991 when they broke SU’s streak of 10 straight wins dating back to 1980 (the 1987 race was cancelled). The Orange will look to reclaim the cup for the first time in over a decade when they host the Big Green.
Dr. Anthony Ladd commissioned the Packard Trophy in 1959 to honor his father-in-law, Edward N. Packard (SU class of 1906). The sterling silver cup is awarded annually to the winner of the Syracuse-Dartmouth race. Packard was the stroke of the 1904 varsity eight, the first SU crew to capture an IRA championship.
The varsity eight race, which decides the winner of the Packard Trophy, will begin at 8:00 a.m. The second varsity/JV eight event begins at 8:20, and the freshman eights start at 8:40. The ceremony for the christening of a new racing shell in honor of former head coach Bill Sanford is scheduled for 9:00 a.m.
