STORRS, Conn. - Four members of the Syracuse women's lacrosse team were named to the 2003 IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-North Region teams. Sophomore Monica Joines, senior Ellen Rust and junior Leigh-Ann Zimmer were named first-team all-region, while senior Carla Gigon was a second-team selection.
Joines, a midfielder, was second on the team in scoring in 2003 with 40 points on 34 goals and six assists. She was tied for the team lead with eight free-position goals and recorded 17 ground balls. It was the first all-region selection of her career. Joines was a unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team. She scored at least one goal in 14-of-16 games and posted a career-high eight points versus Colgate.
Rust also received first-team all-region honors for the first time in her career. She is a two-time first-team All-BIG EAST performer. A co-captain, Rust started all 16 games in the defense for the Orangewomen, picking up the opposing team’s top attacker. Rust tallied her first career assist on Saturday, May 3 against Northwestern. She tied for third on the team with 15 caused turnovers.
Zimmer has now earned first-team All-North Region accolades in each of her three seasons. She was also a first-team All-BIG EAST selection in 2003. The midfielder led the Orangewomen with 54 points on 43 goals and 11 assists. Zimmer scored at least two goals in 15-of-16 games in 2003. She also finished fourth on the team with 28 groundballs and tied for first in caused turnovers with 19.
Gigon started all 16 games in goal for the Orangewomen in 2003. She made 153 saves and registered an 8.11 goals against average. The second-team selection was Gigon's first career postseason honor. She is SU's all-time leader with 475 career saves. Her save total ranked second on the SU single-season list and made her the only goalkeeper in SU history with two seasons of at least 150 saves.
The four all-region selections is the second most for Syracuse in the program's six seasons. The 2000 team boasted five players on the All-North Region First and Second Teams.
The Orangewomen finished the 2003 season with a 10-6 record and their fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament.
