SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Three members of the Syracuse track & field teams qualified for the competition at the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Championship hosted by Cal State Sacramento. Alison Culley and Tim Adrian automatically qualified in the 200-meter dash and discus, respectively, while Opal Jones participated in the 100-meter hurdles as a wild card entry.
Jones was the first SU student-athlete to compete. The senior finished her career in the 100-meter hurdle preliminary round. Jones, the SU school-record holder in the event, did not finish her heat.
Adrian and Culley, both seniors, will begin competition on Thursday, June 12. Adrian will compete in the discus preliminaries, while Culley runs in the first round of the 200-meter dash. Both events begin at 1:15 p.m.
Culley, the 2003 ECAC champion in both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, is making her first appearance at the NCAA meet. Adrian is also competing at nationals for the first time. He is a two-time BIG EAST shot put champion and the 2001 conference title holder in the discus.
Both remaining student-athletes automatically qualified for the championship meet by finishing in the top five at the regional competition held at George Mason Univeristy on May 30-31.
