Field Hockey Beats Albany, 8-1

Seven different Orangewomen scored as the Syracuse field hockey team posted an 8-1 victory against Albany in its 2003 home opener at J.S. Coyne Stadium. It was the first win of the season for the Orangewomen, whose eight goals were the most since a 9-0 shutout of Lowell back in 1990.
SU junior forward Meredith Gettel (Rehresburg, Pa./Tulpehocken) scored twice, while two of her classmates also netted goals. First-year players Megan Stuart (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot), Meg Ricker (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area) and Ashley Fry (Douglassville, Pa./Oley Valley) all scored their first collegiate goals.
Syracuse (1-3) took a 2-0 lead into halftime behind goals by senior Jackie Sheaffer (Richfield, Pa/Middleburg) and junior Brittany Carriero (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville). Each were unassisted off rebounds.
The Orangewomen registered six goals in the second half. The prettiest goal of the night, SU's only assisted tally, was when sophomore forward Paige Sullivan (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon) carried the ball about 40 yards upfield, weaved her away around a couple of defenders, and then passed off to a diving Ricker on the left side.
SU built a 6-0 lead before Albany scored its lone goal of the night. Alexis Johnson punched in a pass from Amber Morris with 17:17 left to play in the contest.
Albany starting goalkeeper Marisa Maze totaled 14 saves on the night, including a stop on a penalty stroke by Stuart in the first half. Barbara Czaplinski relieved Maze with 23:16 remaining in the game. Czaplinski finished with six saves. All in all, the Orangewomen outshot Albany, 31-7. SU goalie Betsy Wagner (Cherry Hills, Colo./Colorado Academy) had three saves.
The Great Danes lost their third-straight game and are 1-3 on the season.
Syracuse returns home for two games this weekend. On Fri., Sept. 12, the Orangewomen host Central Michigan at 7 p.m. On Sun., Sept. 14, SU will take on Columbia at 1 p.m.
