ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. - The Syracuse men's soccer team ran its unbeaten streak to three games with a 2-2 double-overtime tie at St. Bonaventure on Wednesday, September 10. The Orangemen are now 1-1-2, while the Bonnies are 0-3-1.
St. Bonaventure took an early lead on an unassisted goal by Kevin Omokhua in the sixth minute of the game. The score remained 1-0 the rest of the first half and into the second when SU's Anthony Matrone netted his first career goal in the 60th minute of play to tie the score at 1-1.
The Orangemen took a late lead when senior forward Kirk Johnson scored his first tally of the season with just 2:58 left in the second half. The Bonnies came back just 15 seconds later with the final goal of the game. Ryan Mahoney sent the contest into overtime on an assist from Omokhua.
The 15 seconds between goals was the fastest time elapsed between scores by both teams in SU history. The previous mark was 19 seconds on October 4, 2000 versus Colgate.
Johnson's goal was the 28th of his career, moving him into a tie for seventh place on the Syracuse career list. The goal also moved him into a sixth-place tie on the career points list with 71.
Reigning BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week Alim Karim made six saves in the tie. The Bonnies first goal snapped Karim's string of 205:41 without allowing the opposition to score. St. Bonaventure's Mike Krupka made three saves.
The tie snapped a 19-game win streak for the Orangemen versus St. Bonaventure. SU has never been defeated in the series, dating back to 1977. The tie also extended the Orangemen's unbeaten string versus team in the New York Region to eight games (5-0-3).
SU has now tied consecutive games for the first time since 2000. It is only the third time since 1991 the Orangemen have had two ties in a season.
The Orangemen play the second of a five-game stretch versus New York Region teams at Adelphi on Saturday, September 13. SU returns home to face Colgate at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 17.
