GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The Syracuse men's soccer team had its three-game unbeaten streak snapped with a 2-1 double-overtime loss at Adelphi on Saturday, September 13. The Orangemen are now 1-2-2, while the Panthers stand at 2-1-1.
The game featured a combined 50 fouls and two goals off penalty kicks. After a scoreless first half, the Orangemen took a 1-0 lead on a penalty-kick goal by sophomore Ilias Calaitzidis in the 52nd minute. It was Calaitzidis' team-leading second goal of the season and the second time in his career he has converted on a penalty-kick opportunity.
The Panthers tied the game in the 74th minute on a penalty kick of their own. Jose Castillo capitalized on the free opportunity. The score remained deadlocked through the remainder of regulation and one 10-minute overtime period. Adelphi notched the game-winner 1:23 into the second extra session on a score by Sigurd Riksfjord. Marlon Clarke was credited with the assist.
Sophomore goalkeeper Alim Karim made four saves in the loss. Tom Cunningham was the winning keeper for Adelphi with six saves.
The loss snapped the Orangemen's eight-game unbeaten streak versus New York Region teams. It was SU's first loss to the Panthers since 1993, a string of nine games.
The Orangemen return home to host Colgate, another state rival on Wednesday, September 17. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium.
