SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Freshman Richard Asante recorded his first two career assists and sophomore Jeff Evans scored his first career game-winning goal to lead the Syracuse men's soccer team to a 2-0 victory versus Colgate at the SU Soccer Stadium on Wednesday, September 17. The Orangemen snapped a three-game winless streak to improve to 2-2-2, while the Raiders are now 1-3-1.
Both of the Orangemen's goals came in the final 6:23 of the game. Evans notched the first of the game in the 84th minute. Asante served the ball into the box off a corner kick where junior Alejandro Nuno headed the ball to Evans' feet. Evans pushed it past the Colgate keeper for his first tally of the season. The assists were the first career points for both Asante and Nuno.
The Orangemen came back with an insurance goal just more than three minutes later. Asante again played a ball into the box off a corner kick, but this time senior Kirk Johnson did the honors, heading it into the back of the net. It was Johnson's second goal of the season and 29th of his career. He is now tied for sixth place on the Syracuse all-time goals scored list with Gabriel Gervais.
Sophomore Alim Karim earned his third shutout of the season, topping his total of two from all of last season. Karim needed to make just one save as the SU defense limited the Raiders to only four shots, including one in the second half. Colgate's Will Martin made four saves in the loss.
The Orangemen are now 2-0-1 at home this season and have yet to allow a goal to a visiting team. The two-goal victory was the first game Syracuse has played this season not decided by a single tally, and only the second game this season not to go to overtime.
The game was SU's first home game since September 7 and last home contest until October 2. The Orangemen travel to BIG EAST rival St. John's on Saturday, September 20. Kickoff versus the ninth-ranked Red Storm is at 8 p.m.
