Sophomore back Joanne Lombard (Ambler, Pa./Gwynedd Academy) notched her fourth goal of the season (eighth of her career) off a penalty corner just 13:45 into the contest to give Syracuse a 1-0 lead against No. 6-ranked Penn State (6-1), but the Nittany Lions rattled off four consecutive goals for a 4-1 victory.
Syracuse made the most of an early opportunity. Senior forward Ann-Marie Guglieri (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) and Meredith Gettel (Rehresburg, Pa./Tulpechocken) each assisted on Lombard's goal which kept the Orangewomen ahead or even with Penn State until the Nittany Lions took a 2-1 lead at the 39:53 mark of the second half.
Syracuse goalkeeper Betsy Wagner (Cherry Hills, Colo./Colorado Academy) made saves on two Penn State penalty stroke opportunities to keep the game knotted at 1-1. Wagner turned away Nittany Lion senior Heather Conroy before stopping penalty-stroke specialist Mary Schaefer minutes later.
Timarie Legal netted PSU's first goal at 27:46.
Conroy, Schaefer and Karin Grap all scored goals for the Nittany Lions in the second half.
Wagner tallied a career-high 11 saves. Annie Zinkavich finished with two saves for Penn State.
Overall, PSU outshot Syracuse, 21-5. The Nittany Lions had 14 penalty corners to Syracuse's seven.
The Orangewomen, who are now 3-5 on the season, 0-1 in the BIG EAST, will next be in action on Sept. 28, when they take on No. 17-ranked Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass. at 1 p.m.
