The 18th-ranked Boston College field hockey team collected a 3-1 BIG EAST win at Alumni Stadium on Sept. 28. Â With the win, the Eagles improve to 6-3 overall (2-0 BIG EAST). Â The Orangewomen are 3-6 (0-2 BIG EAST).
It is the first time in 15 seasons of BIG EAST Field Hockey that Syracuse has started 0-2 in conference play.
Boston College was celebrating its first Alumni Day.
The Eagles collected one goal in a dominating first half. Â Outshooting Syracuse 9-1, BC capitalized on a penalty corner play for the 1-0 halftime margin. Â Sara York connected on a nice feed from Kim French and an initial entry by Lauren Schultz.
Freshman Tara Fernandes scored what would stand as the game winner, with the assist once again going to French. Â With just more than 16 minutes left in regulation, the score was the first of her collegiate career. Â
Syracuse answered back to cut the deficit in half, behind a nice, strong shot by sophomore sweeper Michelle Sola (Blandon, Pa./Oley Valley). Â It was Sola's first goal of the season. Â York, however, struck back with six seconds left, lifting a shot up over SU goalkeeper Betsy Wagner's (Cherry Hills, Colo./Colorado Academy) head for the final 3-1 count.
Lauren Hill collected five saves in net for BC, while Wagner finished with nine stops for Syracuse.
Syracuse will play a non-conference game at home this week when it takes on Massachusetts at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3, at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
