SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Seniors Anne-Marie Lapalme and Nina Scalzo recorded three points each in SU’s 4-0 victory against Albany, Thursday night at the Syracuse Soccer Stadium. The Orangewomen (6-2-0, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) took 41 shots versus the Great Danes (0-7-1, 0-0-0 America East), breaking the previous team record of 35 shots launched against Providence in 1998.
Scalzo’s assist moved her into sole possession of sixth place on SU’s all-time assist list and her goal was the 24th of her career, which puts her one behind Jenna Szyluk for third on SU’s career goals scored ledger.
The Orangewomen dominated the contest from the outset. Lapalme gave SU a 1-0 lead at the 22:53 mark when she beat Albany goalkeeper Erika Van Zandt. It was the first goal of 2003 for Lapalme, who finished tied for second on the team with four goals in 2002. Junior Helen Fox gave the Orangewomen a 2-0 advantage 2:25 later when she deflected a Lapalme crossing pass into the net at 25:18. Scalzo scored her team- leading sixth goal of the year at 34:24 to extend SU’s advantage to 3-0. The Orangewomen out shot Albany 22-0 in the first half, and held a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks in the first session.
In the second half the Orangewomen continued to pressure the Great Danes. Junior Kristina Cristofori netted her fifth goal of the year at 60:31, when she one-timed a Scalzo feed past Van Zandt to close the scoring.
Senior goalkeeper Jenelle Ferri replaced starter Emily Kowalczyk at the break and played the final 45 minutes of the contest. It was the first game action of her career. It was the second time in program history that the Orangewomen did not surrender a shot. Syracuse held St. Bonaventure without a shot in its 2-0 victory versus the Bonnies on Sept. 10, 2000.
Fox and freshman Molly McManus made their first career starts, and juniors Taryn Provencher, Elaina Haskos and sophomore Jenna Richter played their first minutes of the season in the contest. The game marked the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
Van Zandt and Beth Spinelli combined to record 12 saves for the Great Danes.
The Orangewomen play at Seton Hall on Sunday, Sept. 28 in a BIG EAST cross-over match. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
