
Syracuse Track and Field Opens 2004 Competition at USTCA Series Meet

The Orange will have 54 representatives at the meet competing against student-athletes from Bucknell, Cornell, Georgetown, Howard, LaSalle, Lehigh, Maryland, Maryland-Eastern Shore, Mount St. Mary’s, Penn State, Rutgers, St. Francis, St. Joseph, Seton Hall and Villanova. All events will take place at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.
At Cornell, junior Johvonne Hernandez won the weight throw and the shot put, hitting BIG EAST and ECAC qualifying marks in both events. Junior Tatiana Warren won the long jump and freshman Sheron Mark won the triple jump. Junior Jenna Grimaldi won the high jump and freshman Aulton Kohn won the 60-meter dash.
At last year’s USTCA meet, the Orangewomen placed third and the Orangemen placed sixth. Hernandez won the weight throw and finished second in the shot put. Grimaldi won the high jump, and former standout and current assistant coach Alison Culley finished second in the both the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash. Aprelle Watkins placed second in the triple jump. John Bitok won the 3,000-meter run and Tim Adrian placed second in the shot put.
The meet will take place on Saturday, Jan. 17, beginning at 10:00 a.m., with the women’s 5,000-meter run and the women’s weight throw. The final track event begins at 5:30 p.m. with the men’s 4x800-meter relay, and the last field event is the men’s shot put, which begins at 4:00 p.m. Results will be available on the Internet at www.gopsusports.com.
