
Villanova Defeats Basketball Orangewomen, 64-42

VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Syracuse University women's basketball team lost to Villanova, 64-42, in a BIG EAST game on Tuesday, January 27 at The Pavilion.
Senior Julie McBride led the Orangewomen with 12 points and six rebounds. Junior Chineze Nwagbo scored all eight of her points in the first half and finished with six boards. Junior Rochelle Coleman scored all nine of her points after halftime, and finished the game with five caroms and a team-high three assists. Freshman Lauren Kohn recorded eight points on 3-of-9 shooting.
Syracuse attempted just 13 three-pointers. It is the lowest total of the season for the Orange, and the first time SU has attempted less than 16 from long-range all season (vs. Cornell).
Villanova held a 10-9 edge midway through the first half. The Wildcats went on an 18-5 run, including three triples, over the next 4:43 to take a 28-14 advantage. McBride scored all eight of her first-half points, and SU's final eight points of the half, during the final 2:30, including a 26-foot jumper with 0.3 seconds on the clock to cut the halftime score to 31-22.
The Wildcats used a 7-1 run to extend its advantage to 15 points, 38-23, with 17:26 on the clock. Syracuse went on an 8-0 tear keyed by McBride, who scored SU's first four points of the half, to pull to within seven, 38-31, with 14:29 left to play. Villanova outscored the Orangewomen 26-11 the rest of the game to earn the 22-point victory.
"We got a lot of what we wanted," Syracuse head coach Keith Cieplicki said. "We didn't make shots when we needed to, but overall, it was a pretty good effort. We're playing some pretty good teams during this stretch. We just need to persevere."
Liad Suez led the Wildcats with 14 points. Courtney Mix recorded eight points, 11 rebounds and nine assists. Jennifer Hilgenberg posted 10 points, four rebounds and five helpers. Courtney Roantree and Jenna Viani each scored seven off the bench. Villanova shot 50 percent (25-of-50) from the floor, including 40 percent (10-of-25) from three-point range.
The Orangewomen host Virginia Tech on Saturday at noon in Manley Field House.
