
Zimmer Tabbed as Preseason Offensive Player of the Year

Zimmer, a senior, was also unanimously selected to the preseason All-BIG EAST Team. In 2003, she led the Orangewomen with 54 points on 43 goals and 11 assists and already ranks second in career goals (119), third in career assists (40) and second in career points (159) at SU. She was a second-team IWLCA All-American in 2002 and has been an All-North Region First Team pick in her first three seasons.
Zimmer is joined by junior midfielder Monica Joines (unanimous selection) and sophomore Stephanie Walker on the preseason all-conference squad. Joines was SU’s second leading scorer in 2003, notching 40 points on 34 goals and six assists. Joines was an IWLCA Third Team All-America pick last season. She was also a first-team All-North Region selection in 2003 and earned first-team all-conference honors. Walker started all 16 games as a freshman and tallied four points. She was an All-BIG EAST Second Team choice in 2003.
The Orangewomen garnered one first-place vote and were picked to finish second in the conference with a total of 29 points. Defending league champion Georgetown received the other six first-place votes and was picked to win the league with 36 points. The Hoyas’ Michi Ellers earned Preseason Defensive Player of the Year accolades and Georgetown was the only other team besides the Orangewomen to place three players on the preseason all-conference team.
Notre Dame (26 points) was picked to finish third, followed by Rutgers (20 points) and Connecticut (16 points). Boston College (15 points) and Virginia Tech (six points) claimed the sixth and seventh spots.
Syracuse will host Pennsylvania in scrimmage on Saturday, Feb. 14 before opening their season at No. 2 Virginia on Saturday, Feb. 28.
