OTTAWA, Ontario – Syracuse sophomore goalkeeper Alim Karim has been named to the Canadian Men’s Olympic team (U-23) for the CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying tournament. The two finalists of the competition, which will be held in Guadalajara, Mexico from February 2-12, will qualify for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
Karim is one of two goalkeepers on the 20-man roster. He is one of five players currently playing collegiate soccer in the United States.
Karim is one of seven players from the Canadian Under-20 team that reached the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Youth Championship in December. The 6-1 sophomore also played with the Canadian Olympic Team in November in a set of two qualifying games with El Salvador.
Karim played almost 1,500 minutes in net for SU in 2003. He compiled a 1.53 goals against average and recorded four shutouts. After only two seasons, Karim already ranks ninth on the Orangemen's career saves list with 154. His 1.60 career goals against average is the eighth-best in Syracuse history.
