Buffalo Bills Sign Shafer to NFL Europe

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. – The Buffalo Bills signed former Syracuse standout Mike Shafer to a free-agent contract this week. He will be allocated to participate in NFL Europe this spring. The league’s allocation draft will take place on February 8 and NFL Europe training camps start on February 27 in Tampa, Fla. NFL Europe’s season begins April 3.
Shafer was Syracuse’s starting punter for four years, 1999-2002. He is the school’s all-time leader with 249 career punts and 10,073 career punting yards, and he ranks fourth on the yards per punt list (40.5 ypp). He also holds the record for most punts in a season with 77 in 2001. After graduation, Shafer signed a rookie free-agent contract with the Houston Texans and spent the 2003 preseason with the St. Louis Rams.
