SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Freshman Lauren Kohn scored a career-high 18 points on a personal-best six three-pointers to lead the Orangewomen, but Syracuse lost to Yale, 70-54, on Monday, Jan. 5 in Manley Field House.
Kohn was one of three Orangewomen scoring in double figures. Junior Chineze Nwagbo finished the game with a season-high 14 points, six rebounds and a career-best five steals. Junior Rochelle Coleman had 13 points and six boards.
Senior Julie McBride posted a season-high eight assists to become the first Orangewoman to record 1,300 points and 500 assists in her career. With one point against the Bulldogs, McBride has 1,335 markers and 503 helpers in three-plus seasons. Yale held McBride without a field goal for the first time in her career. Her school-record streak of games with a made three-pointer was halted at 37.
Yale (1-9) made 63.6 percent (7-of-11) of its three-point attempts, while Syracuse hit on just 18.8 percent (6-of-32) of its attempts from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs hit 26-of-46 (56.5 percent) of their field goal attempts compared to SU's 20-of-65 (30.8 percent) rate.
"Yale played a good game tonight. We didn't play as well as we believe we're capable of. We can just take this one and learn from it," SU head coach Keith Cieplicki said. "When we don't make shots, it's going to be a struggle. The good news is we get to play again in 48 hours so we can put this one out of our minds."
Syracuse (3-7) struggled from the opening tip, managing just five points in the first 10 minutes after missing its first five shots, all three-point attempts. The Orangewomen missed their first 10 three-pointers. Yale led, 13-5, with 10:02 left in the first half. The Bulldogs opened up a 17-point advantage, 35-18, with 1:59 left before taking a 37-21 lead into the break.
The Orangewomen reduced the deficit to eight, 41-33, less than four minutes into the second half, led by three triples from Kohn. Yale regained the double-digit advantage with back-to-back treys and led 47-35 with 14 minutes remaining in the game. SU closed within seven, 55-48, with 7:18 on the clock, but the Bulldogs went on an 11-1 run during the next five minutes to put the game out of reach, 66-49, with 1:37 to play.
Four Bulldogs reached double figures in the scoring column. Junior Tory Mauseth led Yale with 17 points on 6-of-6 shooting, including 5-of-5 from three-point range. Junior Lindsay Page finished with 16 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Erica Davis had 12 points and five boards, while senior Brynn Gingras posted 10 points, five caroms and five assists.
Syracuse opens its BIG EAST schedule on Wednesday, Jan. 7, when the Orange play at Pittsburgh at 7:00 p.m.
