SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Syracuse men's soccer team will play its first home game in three weeks when it hosts BIG EAST rival Georgetown at the SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 1 p.m. The first 500 fans through the gates will receive an autographed team picture.
Syracuse (2-6-0, 0-2-0) has lost three straight games by a score of 1-0. It is the first time in school history the Orange has lost consecutive games by a 1-0 margin. SU has played 10 straight games decided by one goal. The last game to have at least a two-goal margin was a 4-0 victory against Cornell on Oct. 22, 2003. The Syracuse defense has been solid all season, allowing just nine goals in eight games. The goalkeeping tandem of juniors Rich Scheer and Alim Karim have combined for a 1.10 goals against average. Scheer has recorded both of SU’s victories and owns the Orange’s lone shutout. Karim has started twice this season, the season-opener against St. Bonaventure and the last game, a 1-0 loss at Colgate. Offensively, freshman Pete Rowley leads the team in scoring with two goals and four points. Rowley has missed the last four games with a leg injury. Redshirt freshman Isaac Collings has a goal and an assist for three points. Senior Jeff Evans has one goal, the game-winning tally at Cornell.
The Hoyas (5-5-0, 1-2-0) have won two straight games, including a 2-1 decision versus West Virginia on Wednesday. Georgetown erupted for eight goals, seven of them in the second half, in its victory (8-1) versus Mount St. Mary’s on Sept. 25. Other than that offensive outburst, Georgetown has not scored more than two goals in one game. Ricky Schramm leads the team with seven goals and three assists for 17 points. Schramm scored two goals and had an assist against Mount St. Mary’s. Kaiser Chowdhry is next on the list with three goals and three assists for nine points. Danny McNally also has nine point on two goals and five assists. Andrew Keszler leads the Hoyas goalkeeping corps with a 1.68 goals against average in 911:35 minutes of play. He has 43 saves and two shutouts.
The Hoyas lead the all-time series with Syracuse, 7-5-1. The two teams have split the last five meetings, 2-2-1 with Georgetown taking last year’s game, 4-1, in Washington. Syracuse has won the last two meetings at home. The Orange won 3-2 in overtime in 2002 and 2-0 in 1999. The two teams did not play in 2001 because of the BIG EAST’s rotating schedule.
