SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Junior forward Paige Sullivan (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon) scored her team-high seventh goal of the season off an assist from linemate Brittany Carriero (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) just 7:40 into the contest and that would be all No. 17-ranked Syracuse would need to defeat Providence, 1-0, at Coyne Field. The win improved the Orange record to 10-5 overall, 3-1 in the BIG EAST Conference.
The starting Syracuse forward line of Sullivan, Carriero and senior Meredith Gettel (Rehrersburg, Pa./Tulpehocken) have accounted for 41 of SU's 92 points this season and 17 of its 36 goals. Carriero leads the team with 16 points (six goals). Sullivan is second with 15 points and Gettel is fifth with 10 points (four goals).
Syracuse and Providence played through a steady rain for the full 70 minutes. Orange goalkeeper Betsy Wagner (Cherry Hills, Colo./Colorado Academy) recorded three saves, while Providence goalie Meredith Jones saved five of SU's 14 shots. It was Wagner's fourth shutout of the season and eighth of her career.
The Friars are 7-9 on the season and 0-3 in the BIG EAST.
