SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead just 56 seconds into the contest and never looked back on its way to a 3-1 field hockey victory against No. 17-ranked Syracuse at a rainy Coyne Field. It was the second win for the Big Green against the Orange in the series' six-game history.
Dartmouth (5-7) attacked the Syracuse cage early, forcing a penalty corner within the first minute of the game. The rebounded ball found its way to Ashley Choren's stick, who shot it past SU goalkeeper Betsy Wagner (Cherry Hills, Colo./Colorado Academy) for the contest's first goal.
Syracuse (10-6, 3-1 BIG EAST) tied the score at 1-1 when its penalty-corner unit of Meredith Gettel (Rehrersburg, Pa./Tulpehocken), Lindsay Peirson (North Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial) and Joanne Lombard (Ambler, Pa./Gwynedd Academy) connected for a goal at 14:08 of the first half. It was Lombard's seventh goal of the season and 20th of her career.
Each team attempted four shots in the first half, saves were one apiece for each goalkeeper and SU held a 5-4 edge in penalty corners during the first 35 minutes.
Lindsay Gossage knocked in a long crossing pass from Abby Brown at 43:45 of the second half to give Dartmouth a 2-1 lead. Brown netted the Big Green's third goal at 55:01 with a long hit from the top of the circle.
The Dartmouth defense limited Syracuse to just two shots in the second half.
Wagner finished with four saves for SU, while Lauren Balukjian had two saves for Dartmouth.
The Orange will next be in action on Friday, Oct. 22, at Connecticut. The Huskies are undefeated this season and in first place in the BIG EAST Conference. Syracuse is second in the league standings with a 3-1 record.
