AMHERST, MASS. -- For the second consecutive game, the No. 16-ranked Syracuse University field hockey team used four goals to dispose of an opponent. This time the Orange defeated Massachusetts, 4-1, to extend its winning streak to six games. Syracuse is 7-4 on the season, while the Minutewomen are 2-9.
The red-hot Orange jumped out to a 1-0 lead thanks to a rebound goal by senior forward Meredith Gettel (Rehrersburg, Pa./Tulpehocken) just 13:57 into the first half. Classmate Brittany Carriero (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) made it 2-0 right before halftime with her fourth goal of the season off an assist from junior forward Paige Sullivan (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon).
Syracuse struck quickly after the break. Sullivan netted her fourth goal of the season when she intercepted a UMass crossing pass and scored to give SU a 3-0 lead just a 1:57 into the second half.
Junior Joanne Lombard (Ambler, Pa./Gwynedd Academy) gave the Orange a 4-0 lead with her penalty-corner goal at the 40:37 mark. Gettel and senior midfielder Lindsay Peirson (North Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial) were credited with assists on Lombard's second goal of the season.
Senior goalkeeper Betsy Wagner was close to recording her second-straight shutout, but Massachusetts' Rachael Mervine got the Minutewomen on the scoreboard with 7:26 remaining in the contest when she punched in teammate Caitlin Beresin's rebounded shot.
Wagner only faced eight shots in the game as SU outshot the Minutewomen, 16-8. She finished with three saves, while UMass used goalies Christine Tocco and Becky Letourneau who combined for nine saves. Tocco had eight saves in more than 47 minutes of play.
In addition to the advantage in shots, Syracuse had a 5-3 edge in penalty corners.
The Orange returns home on Tuesday, Oct. 5, to face Albany in a 7 p.m. contest at Coyne Field.
