SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Junior back Joanne Lombard (Ambler, Pa./Gwynedd Academy) tied the Syracuse single-game record with four goals to help lead the No. 15-ranked Orange field hockey team to a 6-0 victory against Albany at Coyne Field. It was the seventh-straight win for Syracuse and second shutout in a week.
Syracuse (8-4, 2-0 BIG EAST) went on the offensive early, pressuring Albany goalkeeper Barbara Czaplinski with several shots that resulted in a penalty stroke being awarded to the Orange. Lombard was selected to take the stroke and at the 25:01 mark she put SU ahead, 1-0. Lombard's second goal came off a penalty-corner opportunity with 17:51 remaining in the first half. Lindsay Peirson (North Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial) and Meg Ryan (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) were credited with assists on the play. Just 29 seconds later, Lombard gave the Orange a 3-0 lead when she corralled a loose ball in the circle and put it past Czaplinski. Lombard tied the school record of four goals set by Kristin Aronowicz in 2000, when she tallied her second penalty-corner goal of the night with 13:46 remaining in the first half.
SU led 4-0 at halftime.
In the second half, Albany (5-6, 1-0 America East) gained the edge in time of possession, outshooting Syracuse 4-2 and holding a 4-1 edge in penalty corners. Still, the Orange made the most of its opportunities.
Senior forward Brittany Carriero (Setauket, N.Y./Ward Melville) hit her linemate Paige Sullivan (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon) with a pass on a breakaway that Sullivan safely deposited in the Albany cage for her fifth goal of the season with 13:02 left in the second period. The Orange went ahead, 6-0, when Peirson used a reverse-stick sweep to score her second goal of the season with 7:06 remaining in the contest.
With the four-goal outburst, Lombard moved into the team lead in points (12) and goals (six).
Senior goalkeeper Betsy Wagner (Cherry Hills, Colo./Colorado Academy) played all 70 minutes and recorded her second shutout of the season and sixth of her career. Czaplinski finished with three saves and played the first 66 minutes before being replaced by Jessica Montmarquet.
The Orange takes its seven-game winning streak and 2-0 league record back into BIG EAST play this Friday, Oct. 8, when it plays a pivotal conference match at Villanova at 7 p.m. On Sunday, Oct. 10, Syracuse will play at Lafayette at 1 p.m.
