SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse men’s soccer team snapped its seven-game losing streak with a 2-0 victory versus Rutgers in BIG EAST play at the SU Soccer Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 20. The Orange improved to 3-10-0 overall and 1-5-0 in the conference, while the Scarlet Knights are now 5-7-3 overall and 2-4-2 in league play.
Junior forward Jeff Evans put the Orange ahead, 1-0, in the 26th minute with his second goal of the season. Junior Mike McCallion started the play with a cross into the box to junior Alejandro Nuno who laid off a pass to Evans. Evans beat the Rutgers keeper to the far post to snap a nine-game scoring drought. The assist was the first point of McCallion’s career. Nuno also earned his first assist of the season.
The Orange took its first two-goal lead of the season just 4:51 into the second half. Following a short corner kick, freshman Isaac Collings put a shot on goal that was saved by Lubos Ancin. The shot bounced off Ancin’s hand and ended up on the foot of rookie Brad Peetoom who finished the opportunity to put SU ahead 2-0. It was Peetoom’s second goal of the season and Collings’ team-best second assist.
SU goalkeeper Alim Karim needed just two second-half saves to register his first victory and shutout of the season. It was Karim’s first shutout since a 0-0 tie versus West Virginia on October 10, 2003. Ancin made four saves in goal for the Scarlet Knights. The Scarlet Knights outshot the Orange, 13-8, but put just two shots on goal. The Orange held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The victory was Syracuse’s first at home this season, stopping a six-game losing streak. The two-goal margin also ended a streak of 14 straight games decided by one goal. SU is now 36-8-2 since 1999 when scoring at least two goals, including a 2-1 mark this season.
Syracuse is unbeaten in its last five games versus the Scarlet Knights (4-0-1). Rutgers is winless in its four BIG EAST road games (0-3-1) and has now lost four straight at the SU soccer stadium.
The Orange will play its final home game of the season on Saturday, Oct. 23 versus Providence. Kickoff at the SU Soccer Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m.
