SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Ezra Prendergast’s goal in the 77th minute gave the Orange a 1-0 victory versus Providence in BIG EAST men’s soccer action at the SU Soccer Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 23. Syracuse has won two straight games and is now 4-10-0 overall and 2-5-0 in league play. The Friars are 0-13-0 overall and 0-8-0 in conference play.
Prendergast’s header off a corner kick from freshman James Goodwin was the first goal of his career. Goodwin’s assist was the first of his young career. He is the fifth Orange freshman to score at least one point this season.
Junior goalkeeper Alim Karim made three saves in his second consecutive shutout. It is the third time in his career that he has shut out two straight opponents. Providence goalkeeper Jeff Newman made five saves in the loss.
Providence had two chances to score in the second half, but both times Karim made sliding saves with his feet in one-on-one opportunities. Newman also made a great play to keep the Orange off the board with a diving save off a header from Jeff Evans.
Syracuse outshot the Friars 20-9 and held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. The final corner kick of the game produced SU’s goal.
The win was the Orange’s second 1-0 victory of the season (at Oneonta) and ninth game of 2004 that ended in a 1-0 score. It is the first time Syracuse has two 1-0 games in the same season since winning four such games in 1996.
The victory marked the final home game of the 2004 season and the final home appearance for seniors Ryan Hickey and David Rabazzi.
Syracuse plays its final three regular-season games on the road. The Orange is at Connecticut on Oct. 27, at Villanova on Oct. 30 and at Pittsburgh on Nov. 2.
