PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Eight swimmers achieved BIG EAST Conference "A" qualifying times at the Sonny Werblin Invitational hosted by Rutgers University on Oct. 22-23. Hitting these times ensures their participation at the BIG EAST Conference Championship in February. Junior Bobby Schelling (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia Prep) had an outstanding meet, winning three events and finishing second in two others. He surpassed BIG EAST qualifying times in the men's 100 (53.19) and 200 (1:54.90) backstrokes, finishing first in both races.
Freshman Katie Maaske (Jacksonville, Fla./Bolles School) continued to impress as she was faster than the conference standards in four events. She placed first in the women's 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:04.96, nearly breaking Kalei Mahi's 2001 Syracuse University record of 1:04.04. Maaske was second in the 200 individual medley (2:08.75) and in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.65). She was fourth in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:31.95.
Sophomore Luk Boral (Poznan, Poland), the 2004 BIG EAST Conference champion in the men's 200 breaststroke, captured first place at the Sonny Werblin Invite in a time of 2:08.06. He also won the men's 100 breaststroke in a BIG EAST qualifying time of 59.94.
Junior Lisa Wittich (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's Academy) hit her league standards in the 1,650 free (17:29.62) where she finished third and in the 500 freestyle (5:05.55) where she placed fifth.
Junior Pat Mugavin (Northport, N.Y./Northport) achieved his conference time in the 1,650 free (16:33.79), while sophomore Randi Beaulieu (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park) made it in the women's 100 backstroke with a third-place time of 1:00.53.
Freshmen Vanessa Duenas (Miami, Fla./Lourdes Academy) and Erin Homewood (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) had strong performances at the Rutgers Invitational. Duenas was third in the women's 400 individual medley with a time of 4:31.43 and fifth in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:09.89. Both times guarantee her a spot at the conference championship meet later on this season. Homewood was right behind Duenas and Maaske in the 400 individual medley with a sixth-place finish and a time of 4:37.79. She was fourth in the women's 1,650 freestyle with a time of 17:35.40.
Other standout performances for the Orange included the men's 400 medley relay team (Schelling, Boral, Josh Scott and Mike Anstrom) that captured first place with a time of 3:32.33. The 800 freestyle relay (Scott, Schelling, Boral and Rob Persico) finished second in a time of 6:59.13.
The SU men were particularly strong in the 100 backstroke where three of the top four finishers were Orange. Schelling was first, Persico was third (54.67) and Gustavo Kertzscher was fourth (54.80).
