SYRACUSE REMAINS AT NO. 20 IN THE NATIONAL COACHES POLL
Syracuse will be looking to snap a three-game losing streak when it faces Colgate in its final home game of the regular season on Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. SU’s last win was a 1-0 victory against Providence on Oct. 15. Since then, the Orange has lost decisions to Dartmouth (3-1), #7 Connecticut (3-0) and #8 American (2-1 OT). Syracuse owns an overall record of 10-8 this season and finished BIG EAST Conference play with a 3-2 record. The Orange remained at No. 20 in this week’s STX/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll.
SERIES WITH COLGATE
This will be the 23rd field hockey meeting between Syracuse and Colgate. The Orange owns a 16-6 advantage in the all-time series with the Raiders, including last year’s 5-1 victory in Hamilton. Colgate defeated SU, 1-0, at Coyne Field during the 2002 season.
BIG EAST FIELD ALMOST SET
Thanks to a 5-0 Providence win against Villanova last weekend, Syracuse will be the No. 2 seed in the 2004 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship, which begins Nov. 5 at Coyne Field. The Orange earned the No. 2 seed by virtue of a 3-2 league record and its 2-1 double-overtime victory against Boston College back on Sept. 26. The Eagles, ranked No. 11 in the latest national rankings, will be the No. 3 seed as they also finished with a 3-2 conference mark. Regular-season champion Connecticut will be the No. 1 seed and will face either Villanova or Providence. The Friars can qualify with a win against the Huskies on Oct. 30, while a UConn victory ensures Villanova the No. 4 seed.
The first semifinal game features No. 1 vs. No. 4, at 5 p.m., while Syracuse and Boston College are scheduled to take the field at approximately 7 p.m. The championship game will be contested at SU’s Coyne Field on Sunday, Nov. 7, at 12 p.m.
