PRINCETON, N.J. – The Syracuse women’s soccer team closed the season with a 3-1 loss at No. 8 Princeton. The Orange finishes the year 8-9-2, 2-7-1 in the BIG EAST. The Tigers improve to 13-1.
Emily Behncke opened the scoring in the eighth minute giving the Tigers a 1-0 advantage. Behncke would tally her second goal of the night in the 54th minute off an assist by Kristina Fontanez.
Less than four minutes later, the Orange responded as senior Talia Andrews-Rankin played a long ball down the middle and senior Shana Thomas ran it down, beat one defender and fired it past the goalie. Thomas finishes the season with a team-leading six goals and 12 points. She moved into 10th all-time at Syracuse with 11 goals in her two seasons.
Princeton spoiled SU’s hopes of an upset as Esmeralda Negron gave the Tigers a 3-1 advantage with just over 20 minutes remaining.
The last game at Syracuse for senior goalie Shannon Myers was one of her best. She set a new school record with a career-high 17 saves against the Tigers. Myers finishes the season with 101 saves in 18 games. That makes her second on SU’s single-season saves list and she is first all-time at Syracuse with 254 career saves. Myers is second all-time at SU with 14 career shutouts.
The Orange finished with a losing record for just the second time in its nine-year existence. SU will lose 13 seniors this year, but will return eight players with at least one-career start for the 2005 season.
