SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Three different Orange players scored as the No. 20-ranked Syracuse field hockey team defeated Colgate, 3-1, at Coyne Field. The victory snapped a three-game losing skid for the Orange, who wrapped up its regular season with an 11-8 record. The Raiders are 10-7.
Junior midfielder Joanne Lombard (Ambler, Pa./Gwynedd Academy) gave Syracuse a 1-0 lead just four minutes into the contest with a direct corner shot off assists from seniors Lindsay Peirson (North Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial) and Meredith Gettel (Rehrersburg, Pa./Tulpehocken). It was Lombard's eighth goal of the season and 21st of her career.
SU increased its 1-0 halftime lead to 2-0 by 23:46 of the second period when junior forward Paige Sullivan (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon) corralled a crossing pass from Gettel and scored using a reverse-stick swipe. It was Sullivan's eighth goal of the season and ninth of her career. It would prove to be the game-winning goal.
Colgate got on the scoreboard less than two minutes later when Ashley Schneider tipped in a Dana Shaner penalty-corner shot.
With 18 minutes remaining in the contest, the Orange increased its lead back to two goals (3-1) thanks to a goal by sophomore forward Ashley Fry (Douglassville, Pa./Oley Valley). Fry dodged a defender on a broken corner play for the score. It was her fifth goal of the season.
Senior goalkeeper Betsy Wagner (Cherry Hills, Colo./Colorado Academy) had seven saves against the Raiders to increase her season total to 133. Jacque DeMarco finished with four saves for Colgate.
The Orange have more than a week to prepare for the 2004 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship, which it is hosting Nov. 5 and Nov. 7. Syracuse will be the No. 2 seed in the championship and will play No. 3 Boston College at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 5. Top seed Connecticut will play either Villanova or Providence in the first semifinal at 5 p.m. The title game will be contested at Coyne Field at 12 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 7.
