SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 1 seed Connecticut and No. 3 seed Boston College each won their semifinal games on Friday, Nov. 5, to advance to the final of the 2004 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship. Sunday’s title game will begin at 12 p.m. at J.S. Coyne Field on the Syracuse University campus.
No. 1 Connecticut (19-1) defeated No. 4 Villanova, 2-1, with two second-half goals. Laura Puddle had a hand in both Husky goals. She found a wide-open Meagan Hoffman in front of the Villanova goal for the game’s first goal at 33:40 of the second half. The Wildcats tied the game at 1-1 when Sarah Way sent a low grounder to the left of UConn goalie Melissa Bostwick on a penalty stroke with 23:06 remaining in the game. Puddle recorded the game-winning goal less than three minutes later when she got a quick shot off a pass from Lauren Hennessey. After being outshot by Villanova, 9-2, in the first half, Connecticut turned the tables and had 12 shots to the Wildcats’ two in the second period. Bostwick finished with four saves, while Villanova goalkeeper Erin Scott totaled five saves. The Wildcats finished their season with an 11-8 record.
In the second semifinal, Syracuse (11-9) gave Boston College (17-4) all it could handle despite being two players down the entire game. Due to violations of team policy, the Orange played without some of its regulars. The Eagles converted a penalty stroke early in the contest and held on for a 1-0 victory. Kerri Doherty put a penalty stroke by SU goalkeeper Marie O’Brien at the 31:23 mark of the first half for the game’s only goal. O’Brien, who was making her first-ever start in goal for Syracuse, recorded nine saves, including seven in the second half. For the game, BC outshot SU, 16-0.
This is the second consecutive season Boston College and Connecticut will meet in the BIG EAST championship game. The Eagles posted a 4-3 victory in overtime last season against the Huskies.
