SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- National Player of the Year candidate Hakim Warrick had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds to help the #6/6 Syracuse Orange defeat Northern Colorado, 104-54, in the first round of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, Thursday night in the Carrier Dome.
Warrick added five assists and four blocks to his line, all accumulated in 29 minutes of action. Four other Orange players scored in double figures with senior Josh Pace chipping in 13 points, sophomore forward Darryl Watkins having a career-high 12 points and junior Gerry McNamara and sophomore Demetris Nichols adding 11 points each. Watkins also tied his career-high with four blocks and set a personal-best with two steals.
Syracuse came out scoring early and often, with 12 points in the opening three minutes. SU opened the game on a 24-0 run that featured eight points from McNamara and six from Warrick, before Northern Colorado got on the board at the 12:30 mark on a Sean Nolen trifecta. SU extended its lead to 53-20 at the break. Warrick had recorded 13 points and eight rebounds by intermission time.Â
SU began the second stanza on a 21-4 run in the opening six minutes, and maintained a comfortable margin the rest of the way. The lead swelled to as many as 55 in the second half before the margin was settled.
Twelve different players scored for SU and all 15 saw court time. Syracuse surpassed 100 points for the 145th time in program history. The 50-point margin of victory as the eighth largest during Jim Boeheim's tenture as head coach.
Northern Colorado was led by Sean Taibi with 16 points and seven rebounds.
In the first game of the day, Princeton defeated Bucknell, 61-48. Princeton was led by Luke Owings with 21 points and six rebounds, while Bucknell's leading scorer was John Griffin with 18 points.
Syracuse continues action in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic on Friday, Nov. 12 in the Carrier Dome. Bucknell meets Northern Colorado at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Syracuse-Princeton matchup. The winner of the Syracuse-Princeton game advances to the Coaches vs. Cancer semifinals held in Madison Square Garden Nov. 18.
