Trio Leads Orange to 66-56 Victory

SYRACUSE N.Y. – Freshman forward Amanda Adamson tallied a career-high 14 points in her first career start, senior Krystalyn Ellerbe netted a personal-best 13 points and sophomore forward Tracy Harbut tied her career bests with 10 points and seven boards to lead the Orange to a 66-56 victory against the Albany Great Danes on Tuesday night at Manley Field House. The Orange is 6-1 this season, matching last season's win total (6-21). The Great Danes are 4-2 on the season.
Senior center Chineze Nwagbo scored nine points, marking the first time this season she failed to reach double figures in the scoring column. Freshman center Vaida Sipaviciute tallied career highs with five points, seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Senior forward Sarah Wegrzynowicz tallied her first points of the season, netting four points in 10 minutes of action.
Danielle Hutcheson led the Great Danes with 16 points and eight boards. Alicia Learn tallied 14 points, while Maree Jones netted 11 points.
The first 20 minutes featured five ties and seven lead changes. SU held an 8-4 lead at the 15:23 mark of the first half, its largest of the opening frame. Adamson and Nwagbo combined for the Orange's first eight points. Albany led by four points twice in the first half, 18-14 with 9:06 left and again, 29-25, with 1:11 left in the first. Syracuse scored the final three points of the half to cut the lead to one, 29-28, at the break.
The Orange opened the second half with a three-pointer by sophomore Lauren Kohn to take a 31-29 lead. Albany scored two straight baskets, first a deuce by Hutcheson and a three by Learn, to take a 34-31 lead. SU answered back as Adamson netted a layup and Harbut gave the Orange a 35-34 lead on two free throws with 17:18 left in the game. The Orange kept the lead for the rest of the contest. With 6:22 on the clock, SU led 55-49 before going on a 9-2 run over the next 3:30 to open its biggest lead at 64-51. Ellerbe tallied six points on the run.
The Orange outrebounded the Great Danes 47-40, marking the fifth time this year that SU has grabbed more boards than its opponent. The Orange got 25 points off the bench to Albany's six. Syracuse outscored the Great Danes in points off turnovers, 30-11. SU forced 21 turnovers for the game, including 11 in the second half. The Orange committed only 14 miscues of its own, just three in the second half.
The victory clinched SU's first winning non-conference season since going 7-4 in 2001-02. It is the first time in school history the Orange has accumulated six wins on-or-before Dec. 7.
Syracuse returns to action on Dec. 11 as the Orange welcomes Kent State to Manley Field House for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
