Kent State Rallies for 60-49 Win Versus Orange

SYRACUSE N.Y. – Melissa DeGrate scored 16 of her game-high 19 points in the second half to lead visiting Kent State to a 60-49 victory Saturday afternoon at Manley Field House. The loss moves the Orange to 6-2 on the season, while the Golden Flashes improve to 4-3.
Senior forward Chineze Nwagbo and sophomore guard Lauren Kohn led Syracuse with 10 points each. Nwagbo also pulled down a team-high six boards and had three assists. Freshman Amanda Adamson tallied eight points, three rebounds and two blocks in her second career start. Senior guard Krystalyn Ellerbe started her first game of the season and finished with eight points, four boards and four assists.
DeGrate went 7-for-12 from the field, including 5-for-7 from three-point range. She also grabbed nine rebounds. Malika Willoughby added 11 points and nine assists for the Golden Flashes. Lindsay Shearer also netted 11 points and tallied eight boards. Tiffany LaFleur grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and had five blocks before fouling out with 2:19 left in the game.
The Orange had a 9-7 lead with 16:28 left in opening half, before going on a 10-0 run over the next three minutes. SU had its biggest lead of the game at 19-7. Kohn had six points on the run. Kohn tallied all 10 of her points in the first half on 4-for-5 shooting, including the two from behind the arc. After opening the game 8-for-9 from the field, the Orange finished half 3-for-20. Kent State outscored Syracuse 17-8 in the final 13:25, trimming the Orange advantage at the break to 27-24.
With 18:07 left on the clock, SU had a 31-27 lead. The Golden Flashes went on an 11-0 run over the next 10:43 to take a 38-31 lead. The Orange pulled within three with 5:19 remaining in the game at 43-40, but that was as close as SU would get. Syracuse was outscored 17-9 in the last 5:11 of the game.
The Orange was outrebounded 43-30. SU went 3-for-15 (20%) from long range, while Kent State was 9-for-17 (52.9%) from behind the arc. The Orange forced 23 tunovers and commited 19, only eight coming the last 20 minutes.
The loss snapped the Orange's four-game home winning streak and a nine-game run when leading at halftime.
The Orange returns to the hardwood on Dec. 19 as SU hosts Auburn for a 1 p.m. tipoff at Manley Field House.
