Four Syracuse Track and Field Athletes Earn All-BIG EAST Honors

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Four Syracuse University track and field athletes earned All-BIG EAST honors in their respective events at the 2004 BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championship at the Carrier Dome. In the team standings, the Orangewomen finished seventh out of 14 teams with 38 points and the Orangemen placed 11th of 12 teams with 23 points.
Junior Johvonne Hernandez successfully defended her title in the weight throw with a school-record throw of 19.44 meters on the first day of competition. It was her best throw of the season, and is an NCAA Provisional-qualifying mark.
Sophomore Kristen Michalski earned All-BIG EAST honors with a third-place finish in the weight throw. her throw of 18.46 meters was her best of the season and qualifies her for the ECAC Championship.
In the high jump, junior Jenna Grimaldi placed third and was named All-BIG EAST. Her leap of 1.78 meters is an ECAC- and NCAA Provisional-qualifying mark and tied her season-best.
Junior Valerij Petrulevich represented the Orangemen on the All-BIG EAST team. Petrulevich finished third in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.07, which qualifies him for the IC4A Championship.
In his first league championship, freshman Aulton Kohn finished fifth in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.93 seconds. Sophomore Chris Muldoon finished fifth in the mile run with a time of 4:12.81. Sophomore Brien Flewelling finished eighth in the high jump with a leap of 1.91 meters. In the shot put, graduate student Steve Bedard finished fifth with a throw of 16.04 meters. SU's distance medley relay finished fifth with an IC4A-qualifying time of 10:11.29.
Hernandez finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 15.06 meters. Freshman Sheron Mark finished fifth in the triple jump with a leap of 12.05 meters, and junior Tatiana Warren placed seventh with a jump of 11.85 meters. Warren finished sixth in the long jump with a leap of 5.88 meters, and Mark placed seventh with a jump of 5.83 meters.
Miami won the women's team title and earned the Coaching Staff of the Year award. Kim Smith of Providence was named the Most Outstanding Track Performer after breaking the Dome and meet records and recording the top time in the country this year in the 3,000-meters, 8:55.88. Tabia Charles of Miami was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer after winning the long jump and triple jump. Miami's Lauryn Williams broke the Dome and meet records in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.27 seconds, and Notre Dame's Molly Huddle set the meet and Dome records in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:57.23.
Connecticut won the men's title and the Coaching Staff of the Year award. The Huskies' Logan Jones was named the Most Outstanding Track Performer and UConn's Will Thomas was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer. Notre Dame's Selim Nurudeen broke the meet and Dome records with a time of 7.78 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles.
