The Orangewomen did defeat No. 18 Duke in the women’s varsity 8 competition, but Boston University dominated most of the races Saturday, posting victories in four of the five competitions.
The Terriers won the Kittell Cup with a time of 6:12.47 in Saturday’s 2,000-meter race. The Orangewomen finished a close second, less than five seconds of the pace, completing the course in 6:17.30. Duke placed third with a time of 6:21.9. All three teams came off the starting line even and the Orangewomen took an early lead, but Boston University overtook Syracuse about a third of the way into race and held the advantage all the way to the finish line.
Boston University also won the junior varsity 8 race, completing the course in 6:42.70. Duke took second (6:46.6) and the Orangewomen placed third with a time of 6:51. The Blue Devils had early command of the junior varsity 8 race before the Terriers passed them at the 500-meter mark and opened up their lead during the last half of the course.
The Orangewomen recorded their only victory of the day in the varsity 4 “B” race, finishing with a time of 7:27.60. Boston University placed second (7:39.0), and Duke finished third (8:21.8). SU’s varsity 4 “B” boat was coxed by Jane Hanlon and stroked by Jamie Doerr.
Saturday’s regatta was delayed for more than two hours due to fog and icing conditions on the lake. The race was moved to an alternate 2,000-meter course further down Onondaga Lake.
Syracuse will compete against Yale and Cornell on Saturday, April 3 in Ithaca, N.Y.
