Orangewomen Softball Loses to Nevada

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Syracuse softball team finished competition at the San Diego State Tournament with a 9-1, five-inning loss to Nevada on Sunday, March 7. The Orangewomen were 0-5 in tournament play and are now 5-11 on the season.
Syracuse had five hits in the game, two by sophomore Cassie Morales. Sophomore shortstop Alexis Switenko had a hit and drove in SU’s only run, her team-leading 11th of the season. Freshman Jen Elderbroom (Cicero, N.Y.) had a hit in her second career start at second base, and rookie Erin Gray (Katy, Texas) also had hits for Syracuse.
The Wolf Pack (11-9)scored eight runs in the top of the first inning on six hits and four Orangewomen errors. Only three of the runs in the inning were earned. Freshman Courtney Mosch was the losing pitcher, going two-thirds of an inning. She allowed eight runs, three of them earned. Mosch (3-7) struck out one and walked one. Senior Haley Larsen finished the game, throwing four and one-third innings, allowing five hits and one run. She struck out one and walked one. Judith van Kampen (4-4) was the winner, throwing the five-inning complete game. She gave up five hits, striking out six and walking two.
SU plated its only run of the game in the bottom of the first. Junior Tanya Rose led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice. A Morales single put runners on the corners for Switenko, who singled to left to drive in the run.
Nevada scored its final run in the top of the third on a triple by Jamie Waldron. Stacy Mueller led the Wolf Pack with three hits, three runs scored and two RBI. Waldron and Annie Stevens each had two hits.
The Orangewomen continue their spring break trip with a doubleheader versus the University of San Diego on Wednesday, March 10. Game one starts at 4 p.m. eastern time.
