
Varsity Eight Named Crew of the Week

The Syracuse rowing team’s varsity eight was selected as the EAWRC Crew of the Week on Tuesday, April 13.The Orangewomen successfully defended the Orange Challenge Cup against Northeastern and Pennsylvania on April 10. SU’s varsity eight posted a time of 6:32.7, finishing a full five seconds ahead of second-place Northeastern in the 2,000-meter race held on the Schuylkill River. It was the third Cup win for the Orangewomen in the last four years and its fourth Cup victory since the three schools began competing for the trophy in 1979.
SU’s winning boat was coxed by senior captain Marisa Begley and stroked by junior Kelly McGrorey. Junior Kim Garvey rowed in the bow position. Junior Shawna O'Brien, senior captain Shannon Mercurio, sophomore Catherine Henny, junior Anna Goodale, and seniors Juliet Bonczkowski and Michelle Garren rowed in the seven through two seats.
Hobart’s men’s freshman eight and Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s women’s varsity eight also earned crew of the week honors from the ECAC. Those crews shared ECAC NIR accolades.
Syracuse will head to Boston Mass. on Saturday, April 17 to compete against Radcliffe and Dartmouth.
