SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Cassie Morales drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth giving the Syracuse softball team a 6-5 victory versus Providence in the second game of a doubleheader on Friday, April 16. The Friars won the first game, 7-6.
SU is 18-18 overall and 2-4 in the BIG EAST. The Friars are now 25-13-1 overall and 5-5 in the league.
Morales’ game-winning single capped a three-hit day. In the two games, she was 3-for-9 with a double, a run scored and one driven in. Junior Tanya Rose paced the Syracuse offense with four hits, including a double, and four RBI. Rose also walked three times.
Freshman Erin Gray had the best game of her young career with three hits and four RBI in the opener. Sophomore Alexis Switenko recorded three hits, including her sixth home run of the season. Switenko drove in two runs, giving her 29 for the season and sole possession of first place on the Orangewomen’s single-season RBI list. Junior Tiffany Robinson also had three hits and scored twice.
Freshman Courtney Mosch was the pitcher of record in both games. She started game one and was the loser, snapping her six-game winning streak. She earned the victory in game two in relief, improving her record to 12-10. In 10 and one-third innings, Mosch allowed six runs, none of which were earned, striking out seven and walking two. Mosch has not allowed an earned run in her last 29 and one-third innings of work.
Cori Van Dusen and Rachel Bartholomew led the Friars with three hits each Bartholomew drove in five runs, including a home run. Elena Romero also homered and drove in three.
Van Dusen was the winner in game one. She allowed six runs, three of them earned, improving to 11-5. Sara Surosky took the loss in relief in game two, dropping her record to 5-1. She tossed six and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs, three of them earned, striking out four and walking six.
The Orangewomen scored first in the opener, plating two runs in the home half of the first. Gray drove in both runs with a two-out single. Providence tied the game in the top of the third with a pair of unearned runs. A two-out single started the rally, and the Friars plated a run on an error and a single by Bartholomew.
The Friars took a 3-2 lead in the fifth on a two-out single by Bartholomew, but SU knotted the game at 3-3 in home half on another single by Gray. Providence opened up the game with a three-spot in the sixth. Jackie Karsnia drove in two with a double and Shannon Garvin had an RBI single.
SU came back with a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-4 on an RBI single by Rose. Bartholomew got the run back in the top of the seventh with a solo homer.
The Orangewomen rallied in the bottom of the seventh with two runs. Gray drove in the first run with a double and Rose knocked in a run with a bases loaded walk. SU had the tying run on third with two outs, but senior Rachel Park’s hot shot down the line was gloved by the third baseman for the final out.
The second game was a near mirror image of the opener as SU scored another two runs in the first. Both came home on Switenko’s sixth home run of the season. SU stretched the margin to 4-0 in the second inning on a two-RBI single by Rose.
Providence took a 5-4 lead with five runs in the top of the fourth. Bartholomew drove in two with a double and Romero gave the Friars the lead with a three-run home run to right-center field.
Syracuse tied the game in sixth. With the bases loaded and one out, Park hit a ground ball to shortstop. The throw to the plate was in time to cut down the runner, but the return throw to first got away, allowing Robinson to scamper home from second.
The Orangewomen scored the winning run in the eighth. Pinch hitter Jennifer Elderbroom led off with a double to center and moved to third on a bunt single by Robinson. Rose drew an intentional walk to load the bases and with one out Morales drilled a 2-1 pitch into left field for the game winner.
The Orangewomen take to the road for three straight doubleheaders away from home. SU is at Cornell on April 21, Rutgers on April 24 and Villanova on April 25.
