
Orangewomen Lose Both Games of Penn State Doubleheader

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse softball team lost both ends of a doubleheader versus Penn State on Wednesday, April 28 at the SU Softball Stadium. The Nittany Lions were victorious 4-0 in game one and 3-2 in the nightcap. Syracuse is now 19-25, while Penn State improved to 21-27.
The Orange offense combined for seven hits in both games. Senior Nikki Lincoln was SU’s only player with more than one hit, contributing two singles in game two and driving in SU’s only two runs of the afternoon. Junior catcher Katie Kaempfer had the Orangewomen’s only extra-base hit of the game, driving a double to the left-center field gap in the second game. Freshman Erin Gray and junior Cassie Morales accounted for both of SU’s hits the first game with singles. Juniors Tanya Rose and Tiffany Robinson each had singles in the nightcap.
Freshman Courtney Mosch was the losing pitcher for the Orangewomen in the first game. Mosch (13-13) allowed four runs, none of them earned, on four hits. She struck out three and walked two. Missy Beseres earned the win with a complete-game two-hitter. Beseres (9-15) struck out eight and walked one.
Senior Haley Larsen was the loser in game two. Larsen (6-12) allowed three runs, two of them earned. She struck out two and walked two. Shana Riggleman was the winner, giving up two unearned runs and five hits in her eighth complete game of the season. Riggleman (7-2) struck out three without allowing a base on balls.
Barbie Pierce and Kate Gentile paced the Nittany Lions’ offense with three hits on the day. Pierce also led Penn State with two RBI, one in each contest.
Both pitchers came out strong in the opener with neither team recording a baserunner until a two-out walk by Penn State in the top of the second. The Nittany Lions plated the first run in the fifth inning on a two-out Syracuse error. They scored three times in the sixth, one an RBI single by Pierce and two more on a squeeze bunt by Gentile and an error.
Penn State scored first in the second game with, plating all three of their runs in the third inning. Pierce, Katie Stauffer and Scarlett Neal all had RBI singles.
SU remained scoreless until the sixth inning. A hit and an error put runners on base with two outs for Lincoln who delivered a sharp single to center to plate the Orangewomen’s two runs.
Syracuse will try and snap its five-game losing streak on Thursday, April 29 when they host BIG EAST rival Connecticut at 1 p.m.
