
Scanlon Inks Three-Year Deal with NFL's Kansas City Chiefs

Scanlon finished his college career ranked eighth on SU’s career tackles for a loss record ledger with 22.5 tackles for a loss of 92 yards. With 147 tackles in 2003, Scanlon ranks 10th on SU’s single-season record list for tackles by a linebacker and fifth on the record list for tackles by a senior. His 94 solo tackles in 2003 ranks seventh in Syracuse’s history.
Last season, Scanlon started all 12 games at middle linebacker for SU. He was named second-team All-BIG EAST, was an ECAC All-Star, and was named defensive most valuable player at the Blue-Gray All-Star Classic after recording eight total tackles. Scanlon also received SU’s 2003 Bill Horr Most Valuable Player Award. In 2003, Scanlon ranked eighth in the NCAA and third in the BIG EAST with 12.25 total tackles. Scanlon was ranked ninth nationally and second in the league with 7.83 solo stops per contest.
Scanlon is one of seven Orangemen in the NFL’s Class of 2004. Seniors Christian Ferrara, Johnnie Morant and Sampson were all drafted by NFL teams over the weekend. Josh Thomas has agreed to contract terms with the Indianapolis Colts, Thump Belton has signed with the Detroit Lions, and Darryl Kennedy agreed to a contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers. At the conclusion of the 2003 NFL season, 27 former Syracuse University football student-athletes were on NFL rosters, including Downing, who appeared in 14 games last season for the Chiefs, recording 10 solo tackles and three assists.
