The Orangemen rose to No. 4 in this week's Geico/STX coaches poll following an 18-8 victory against Albany in their last outing on April 24. Syracuse owns a 9-2 record and will play host to Massachusetts in the final regular-season home game at 1 p.m. on Sat., May 1. The Orangemen are aiming for their sixth-straight win at home. If they beat UMass, they will post an undefeated home record (6-0) for the first time since the 2002 national championship team went 5-0 at the Carrier Dome.
The Minutemen come into this contest with a 6-6 record. They have lost their last two games to Yale (9-8 in double overtime) and Georgetown (12-10). This game is a must-win situation in order to keep the UMass playoff hopes alive.
This will be the 30th meeting between SU and UMass. The Orangemen own a 24-5 edge in the all-time series which began in 1976. Last season, the Minutemen defeated SU, 14-13 in overtime at Garber Field. It was their first victory against the Orangemen since May 8, 1981. For SU, the loss snapped a 22-game winning streak against the Minutemen.
Senior Day at the Dome
Before the start of this week's game, Syracuse will honor 12 individuals as part of the annual Senior Day festivities. Dan DiPietro, Nick Donatelli, Kevin Dougherty, Sean Lindsay, Steve Lykudis, Brian Nee, Jay Pfeifer, Michael Powell, Andy Shin, Steve Vallone, Donn Vidosh and Alex Zink will be introduced, along with their parents, at midfield at 12:46 p.m. This group of seniors has helped Syracuse compile a four-year record of 47-13. They advanced all the way to the title game as freshmen, helped win an NCAA Championship in 2002 and were semifinalists a season ago in Baltimore.
