Orange Soccer Adds Eight Players for 2004

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse men’s soccer coach Dean Foti has announced that eight players have committed to play for the Orange beginning in 2004-05. The list includes James Goodwin (Merrimack, N.H.), Jonathan Jones (St. Peter, Barbados), Nick Mafi (Worthington, Ohio), Anton Nicholls (Bridgetown, Barbados), Brad Peetoom (Abbotsford, B.C., Canada), Ezra Prendergast (Kingston, Jamaica), Pete Rowley (Reading, Pa.) and Tyler Stoviak (Malvern, Pa.).
Goodwin, a midfielder, is a four-year letterwinner at Merrimack High School. He registered 10 goals and five assists in 2003, and tallied 30 goals and 24 assists for his career. Goodwin captained the Tomahawks as a senior and earned first-team all-state honors. He is a three-time member of the Nashua Telegraph’s All-Star Team.
Jones graduated from The Alexandra School in 2000 and Barbados Community College in 2004. He has been competing in the Barbados national teams system. The midfielder has played on the Barbados Under-19 National Team, the Under-20 National Team, and is currently in the pool of players for Barbados’ World Cup Team.
Mafi has won four letters as a forward and midfielder at Thomas Worthington High School. He scored 18 goals and had 17 assists in his scholastic career, including six goals and six assists as a senior. Mafi helped the Cardinals to the state championship in 2001 and a state runner-up finish in 2002. The squad went 60-10-10 in his four years, winning two conference titles, three district championships and two regional crowns.
Nicholls is a midfielder for the Barbados Soccer Academy club team. He is currently in the player pool for the Barbados Under-20 National Team.
Peetoom was a member of the Under-17 Canadian National Team and is currently in the player pool for the Under-20 National Team. He has played defense for the Abbotsford Mariners since 1993 and was a member of the Provincial All-Star Team from 2001-03. Peetoom was named Abbotsford’s Player of the Year in 2003 and 2004. He has helped the Mariners to a pair of club national championships. Peetoom joins three other Canadian National Team players on the SU roster – junior goalkeeper Alim Karim (Scarborough, Ontario), sophomore Rich Asante (North York, Ontario) and sophomore Frank Bruno (Toronto, Ontario).
Prendergast, a midfielder, will come in as a junior after playing at Globe Institute of Technology in New York City for the past two seasons. Prendergast was an NSCAA first-team All-American and an NJCAA second-team All-American in 2003. He was named the Best Defensive Player of the Region XXI Tournament after helping Globe to the championship. Prior to coming to the U.S., Prendergast played for both the Under-17 and Under-20 Jamaican National Teams.
Rowley was a three-sport athlete as a senior at Muhlenberg High School. He lettered four times in soccer, scoring 66 goals and adding 65 assists as forward. His senior season he tallied 33 goals and 27 assists and was named all-state. Rowley also garnered Berks County Player of the Year honors and was named an NSCAA Regional All-American in 2003.
Stoviak played five seasons at the McDonogh School in Maryland. He tallied 10 career assists from his defensive position and helped the squad to 34 shutouts in his five years. As a senior, Stoviak notched six assists and contributed to 13 shutouts. He captained his high school team last season.
Syracuse returns seven starters and 10 letterwinners from last season’s team that went 4-8-5. The 2004 season begins on September 1 with a home match versus St. Bonaventure.
