PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Junior thrower Johvonne Hernandez was honored as the Women's Most Outstanding Field Performer at the 25th BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championship on May 2 in Piscataway, N.J. Hernandez led the Orangewomen to a fourth-place team finish with victories in the shot put and hammer throw, and a second-place finish in the discus. The Orangemen tied for 10th in the final team standings.
Hernandez' throw of 61.59 meters in the hammer throw on the second day broke the BIG EAST Outdoor meet record of 60.08 meters set by Bethany Hart of Connecticut in 2000. It also exceeded her own school record, set last weekend at the Penn Relays, by more than two meters (59.55 meters). Hernandez has now qualified for the NCAA Regional in each of the three throwing events she competes in (discus, hammer throw, shot put).
Junior Jenna Grimaldi won the high jump with an NCAA Regional-qualifying leap of 1.76 meters. The victory earned her All-BIG EAST status. Grimaldi has been an All-BIG EAST selection six times, and has now won two BIG EAST high jump titles (2002 indoor).
Sophomore Chris Muldoon earned his first career All-BIG EAST selection with a second-place finish in the 5,000-meter run. His time of 14:17.19 was more than 15 seconds faster than his previous personal best, and qualifies him for the NCAA Regional.
Senior LaNae Walker was named to the All-BIG EAST team with a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles. Walker's time of 59.86 is her best of the season and qualifies her for the NCAA Regional.
Freshman Aulton Kohn finished fourth in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. His time of 10.74 in the 100m ties for his second-fastest of the season and qualifies him for the IC4A Championship. Kohn ran the 200m in 21.75, which also meets the IC4A qualifying standards.
Graduate student Aprelle Watkins recorded a season-best mark of 12.76 meters and a fourth-place finish in the triple jump. Her performance qualifies her for the NCAA Regional. Freshman Sheron Mark finished eighth in the event and tied her season-best performance with a leap of 12.17 meters.
Sophomore Kristen Michalski relinquished her hammer throw crown to her teammate Hernandez, but still finished fourth in the event with a heave of 55.36 meters.
The Orange compete at the ECAC and IC4A Championships, May 13-16, in New Haven, Conn.
