SYRACUSE, NY – Syracuse University senior offensive lineman Adam Terry is on the watch list for the 35th annual Rotary Lombardi Award. The Rotary Lombardi Award is presented each December to the college football offensive or defensive lineman who, in addition to outstanding performance and ability, best exemplifies the discipline of legendary coach Vince Lombardi.
Terry, also an Outland Trophy candidate, has started 23 consecutive games at offensive tackle for the Orange. He was named second-team All-BIG EAST and an ECAC All-Star following his junior campaign. Terry has been part of a unit that has blocked for 1,000-yard rushers Walter Reyes (2002, 2003) and James Mungro (2001).
Former SU defensive end and current Indianapolis Colt Dwight Freeney was a finalist for the Rotary Lombardi Award in 2001. Other past finalists from Syracuse include Tim Green in 1985 and Ted Gregory in 1987.
The Rotary Lombardi Award is hosted by the Rotary Club of Houston and benefits the American Cancer Society. The Award was initiated by the Rotary Club in 1970 shortly after the death of Vince Lombardi to cancer. Prior to his coaching career, Lombardi made a name for himself as the smallest but toughest member of Fordham University's "Seven Blocks of Granite," renowned in their day (1934-37) for being the most unyielding line in college football.
Terry is one of six linemen from the BIG EAST on the list of 112. The other players from the BIG EAST are Mathias Kiwanuka (Boston College), Ryan Krug (Connecticut), Rob Petitti (Pittsburgh), Jeremy Trueblood (Boston College) and Rian Wallace (Temple).
Syracuse begins the season on Sunday, September 5 at Purdue. The game kicks off at 1:30 p.m. and will be televised nationally on ABC. SU then plays at Buffalo on September 11 at 6:00 p.m. The Orange kicks off the home portion of the schedule on Saturday, September 18 against Cincinnati at 12:00 p.m. SU will also host Rutgers (Oct. 2 at 12:00 p.m.), Florida State (Oct. 9), Connecticut (Oct. 30) and Pittsburgh (Nov. 6).
