SYRACUSE, NY -- Thirteen former Syracuse University lacrosse players will be in Boston on Aug. 20, competing for the 2004 Major League Lacrosse Championship. The professional outdoor league, now in its fourth full season, completed its 12-week regular season and now sends its top four teams to Bean Town to compete for the championship at Boston University's Nickerson Field.
In the first semifinal on Friday, Aug. 20, the No. 2-seeded Rochester Rattlers will take on the No. 3-seeded Philadelphia Barrage at 5 p.m. Rochester boasts seven former Orange players on its roster (more than any other team in the league) with Casey Powell, Regy Thorpe, Kevin Dougherty, John Glatzel, Sean Lindsay, Ryan Powell and Josh Coffman. Philadelphia rides a five-game winning streak into the MLL semifinals thanks to contributions from former Orange standouts Roy Colsey, Michael Springer and Billy St. George.
The second semifinal features the No. 1-seeded Boston Cannons versus the No. 4-seeded Baltimore Bayhawks at 8 p.m. Tim Byrnes is a key player for Boston, while Gary Gait and Tom Marechek turn Baltimore into a force to be reckoned with.
The championship game will be held on Sunday, Aug. 22 at 1 p.m. It will be televised LIVE by ESPN2. It is the first live national telecast in MLL history.
