SYRACUSE, N.Y. - In new head coach Pat Farmer’s debut, the Syracuse women’s soccer team came away with a 4-0 victory versus the visiting Fairleigh Dickinson Knights Friday night at the SU Soccer Stadium. The game was delayed by lightning for one hour and 50 minutes in the first half.
“I wasn’t sure if I was nervous or just excited,” Farmer said. “I don’t get nervous too often, but I think I was. I’m glad we got this one in and done with.”
Senior forward Nina Scalzo tallied her 25th career goal, moving her into a tie for third on the Orange’s career list. Senior Kelly Bailie and sophomore Molly McManus each scored one goal and one assist in the season opener.
SU senior forward Shana Thomas netted the game’s first goal 31:47 into the contest. Senior Sarah Elnicky lofted a free kick off the head of Bailie to spring Thomas for the go-ahead goal.
McManus challenged the Knight’s goalie Andrea Maston and stole the ball and fired it into the empty net to make it 2-0 after the first half.
Bailie found the back of the net off a corner kick which was tapped by freshman Lauren Jentzen. The assist was Jentzen’s first career point. Scalzo finished the scoring with a header off a perfectly-placed corner kick by McManus.
Senior goalie Shannon Myers finished the night with three saves and recorded her 11th career shutout. Maston finished with six saves.
The Orange travels to Buffalo to face the Bulls on Sunday, Aug. 29 at 1 p.m.
