
Field Hockey Defeats Rutgers, 3-1, in First Conference Game of the Season

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Junior Paige Sullivan (Lebanon, Pa.) and freshman Jessica Lerew (York Springs, Pa.) scored goals for Syracuse in the second half to break a 1-1 tie with Rutgers on the way to a 3-1 BIG EAST Conference field hockey victory. It was the first conference game of the season for both teams.
The Scarlet Knights (3-4, 0-1) were first to get on the scoreboard when Jaime Fraser knocked in a pass from Courtney Hudson just 14:35 into the contest.
Syracuse (2-4, 1-0) tied the game at 1-1 at the 29:21 mark when senior forward Meredith Gettel (Rehrersburg, Pa.) tallied her first goal of the season (12th of her career) in unassisted fashion.
Sullivan netted her first goal of the season at the 34:38 mark off an assist from Jessica Dahle (Farmington, Conn.), while Lerew was credited with the second goal of her career at 50:21.
The Orange outshot Rutgers, 14-8, and held a 10-6 edge in penalty corners.
Senior goalkeeper Betsy Wagner (Cherry Hills, Colo.) recorded three saves, while Rutgers' Kristin Van Rooij finished with seven saves.
Syracuse will next be in action on Sunday, Sept. 19, at Hofstra.
