ALBANY, N.Y. - The Syracuse men's soccer team will travel to Albany to meet the Great Danes in a New York Region matchup at Varsity Field on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 4 p.m. SU is 2-3-0 on the season, while Albany stands at 4-1-1.
Syracuse’s BIG EAST game at Pittsburgh scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 18 was postponed due to the torrential rains caused by the remnants of Hurricane Ivan. The Orange has not played since a 1-0 win at Oneonta on Sept. 14. Rookies have keyed the Syracuse offense thus far in 2004 with three freshman combining for four of the Orange’s five goals. Freshman defender Brad Peetoom became the third newcomer to score a goal with his first career marker at Oneonta. Freshman forward Pete Rowley leads the team with two goals, while redshirt freshman Isaac Collings has a goal and an assist. Junior Jeff Evans has accounted for SU’s other tally, the game-winner at Cornell. Junior goalkeeper Rich Scheer has started the last four games in net, going 2-2 with a 1.00 goals against average. Scheer notched his second career shutout at Oneonta without making a save. The Orange salvaged a victory versus the Red Dragons despite the absence of three starters. Rowley, sophomore midfielder Richard Asante and junior tri-captain Mike McCallion all missed the game due to injuries.
The Great Danes are 4-1-1 after defeating Marist, 2-1, on Sunday. Albany started the year 3-0-1 before losing at home to Colgate, 1-0, on Sept. 15. Yan Gbolo leads the team with three goals, including two game-winners, and six points. Savvas Theofilou and Stephan Hall have accounted for the Great Danes’ other two goals. Bouna Coundoul has played every minute in goal for Albany. In six games, he has registered 34 saves and a 0.32 goals against average. He has four shutouts on the season. Albany’s win at Marist was the first time this season the Great Danes scored more than one goal. Three of their victories have been by 1-0 scores. Their tie with Robert Morris was a 0-0, double-overtime draw.
Syracuse leads the all-time series with Albany, 2-0-0. The Orange won last year’s meeting, 1-0, at the SU Soccer Stadium. It was the first meeting between Syracuse and Albany since 1952.
Both of the Orange’s victories this season have come on the road, a 2-1 win at Cornell and a 1-0 win at Oneonta. SU has won two consecutive road games for the first time since 2001. The Orange has not won three straight road games since the 1999 season (2-1 at Villanova, 3-2 at Providence, 3-0 at Boston College).
