
Orange Football Loses 31-10 at #12 Virginia

The Syracuse football team drove 68 yards on its opening drive and senior kicker Collin Barber kicked a 26-yard field goal to give the Orange a 3-0 lead with 7:53 remaining in the first quarter.
Sophomore quarterback Perry Patterson went 4-for-5 on the first drive for 48 yards. Tight end Joe Kowalewski caught two passes for 27 yards and tailback Walter Reyes rushed for 19 yards on five carries. The Orange forced Virginia to go three and out on its first drive.
The Cavaliers responded with a 59-yard touchdown run by quarterback Marques Hagans to give Virginia a 7-3 lead with 4:30 left in the first quarter.
The Cavaliers added to their lead on a 27-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter by running back Wali Lundy, giving Virginia a 14-3 advantage. Hagans ran for another touchdown with 19 seconds left in the half. The 10-yard touchdown run gave the Cavaliers a 21-3 lead at halftime.
Sophomore linebacker Jerry Mackey tallied his first career sack in the second quarter, it was the first time this season that Hagans has been sacked.
The Orange opened the second half with a 80-yard touchdown drive, capped by a two-yard run by Damien Rhodes.
Reyes finished with 83 yards on 24 carries and he passed James Mungro for third place on SU’s all-time rushing list with 2,913 yards. Reyes is 21 yards behind Larry Csonka for second place. Patterson finished the game 15-for-23 for 141 yards. Rhodes had 10 carries for 34 yards and one touchdown, his second of the season. Senior Jared Jones led the Orange receivers with seven receptions for 70 yards, while Kowalewski finished with three catches for 40 yards.
Virginia kicker Connor Hughes kicked a 36-yard field goal late in the third quarter to give the Cavaliers a 24-10 lead. The Cavaliers added a 39-yard touchdown pass from Hagans to Michael McGrew to make the score 31-10.
