Orange Men's Soccer Loses, 1-0, at West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Syracuse men’s soccer team suffered its second straight shutout, losing at West Virginia, 1-0, on Sunday, Sept. 26. SU is now 2-5-0 overall and 0-2-0 in the BIG EAST. The Mountaineers improved to 4-2-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the league.
West Virginia scored the only goal of the game in the 75th minute. Andrew Wright scored his first goal of the season, finding the back of the net from 35 yards away.
SU goalkeeper Rich Scheer (Livingston, N.J.) made three saves in the losing effort. WVU keeper Nick Noble registered his first shutout of the season with two saves.
West Virginia outshot the Orange, 20-12 and held an 8-5 corner-kick advantage. Junior defender Ezra Prendergast (Kingston, Jamaica) and freshman forward Isaac Collings (Oriskany, N.Y.) each took three shots for Syracuse. Sophomore Richard Asante (North York, Ontario) played for the first time since three games since suffering a knee injury.
The game was the ninth consecutive game for the Orange that has been decided by one goal. SU is 3-6-0 in those contests. Syracuse has been shut out in consecutive games for the first time since the last three outings of the 2000 season. It was SU’s third 1-0 loss of the 2004 season.
SU plays at Colgate at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 29. The Orange returns home on Oct. 3 to take on Georgetown at 1 p.m.
